The Zero-Answer Policy: what it is and why it exists
The Zero-Answer Policy is the central pedagogical claim of Quantum Tutor. When a student submits a problem (e.g., a calculus integral, a physics free-response question, a chemistry stoichiometry problem), the AI does not display the worked solution. Instead, it asks Socratic questions to surface what the student already knows, identifies the conceptual gap, and only reveals each step after the student has demonstrated understanding of the prior step.
This is fundamentally different from "Study Mode" in ChatGPT or "guided" features in Khanmigo, which are opt-in toggles that can be turned off or talked around. The Zero-Answer Policy is enforced at the prompt-engineering level and cannot be bypassed by the student through clever phrasing, repeated requests, or asking the AI to "just give me the answer this once."
The policy exists because the founder spent 15+ years observing that students who are shown answers do not learn the underlying material. They only learn that AI tools produce answers. Quantum Tutor's premise is that for STEM education specifically, the constraint of not getting the answer is the product.
How it works (pedagogy)
When a student sends a message, Quantum Tutor uses an AI classifier to identify what kind of help they need. The classifier routes between seven query categories, each with a different teaching mode:
- Problem-solving: Socratic guided dialogue, never the answer
- Concept explanation: direct, structured explanation (concepts, unlike problems, can be explained directly)
- Work-checking: student shows their work, AI verifies step by step
- Practice request: generates fresh problems to attempt

- Action-button followup: contextual follow-up based on previous response
